Day 2 - City tour of Moscow and guided tour of Moscow Underground

Moscow is a fascinating place to explore, and what better way to do so than by its world-famous metro system!

Travelling on the Moscow underground is an unforgettable experience, with its majestic halls decorated with stunning chandeliers. Our itinerary takes us to some of the most iconic stations the city has to offer, ending in Red Square, where we gaze in wonderment at the colourful onion-domes of Saint Basil’s Cathedral. Commissioned by Ivan the Terrible in the 16th century, legend has it he gouged out the eyes of its architect afterwards, so that he could never create another like it.

After lunch in Moscow’s famous GUM department store, we take the bus to the outskirts of the city for a panoramic view of Moscow from the Lenin Hills. Then we head back past the amazing 17th-century Novodevichy Convent, a beautiful cloister that’s now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

To round off an amazing first day, you can soak up some of Moscow’s vibrant nightlife. Wine bars, world-class restaurants and classical concerts are just three of the great options on offer. Your local guide has all the advice you need.

The Kremlin and its glorious Armoury Museum

This morning, we’re back on the metro, heading for Moscow’s mighty Kremlin. Its world-famous walls enclose an incredible complex of buildings, among them three fine palaces, cathedrals, belfries and towers. While we’re here, we’ll visit the Armoury Museum with its stunning collection of Imperial jewels and regalia.

This afternoon, you’re free to discover more of Moscow’s countless treasures on your own. Again, your guide is on hand to help tailor your itinerary to meet your own personal preferences.

Free time in Moscow & overnight train to St Petersburg

More free time to use as you please – where will you go? Lenin’s Mausoleum, perhaps? Entrance is free, but expect a bit of a queue (not open every day). Maybe you’ll choose the Tretyakov Gallery or Bolshoi Theatre, or take a stroll in Gorky Park. Then there’s the impressive GUM department store to pick up some souvenirs. Alternatively, take a tour to Sergiev Posad, a beautiful monastery 60 kilometres outside Moscow, and one of the country’s most important pilgrimage sites.

Just before midnight, we head off to St Petersburg on the famous Red Arrow Train, which in Soviet times ferried the Communist Party elite between Moscow and Leningrad (modern-day St Petersburg) – a unique experience, like stepping back in time. Accommodation is in four-berth compartments. Arrive in St Petersburg 7.55am.

Say hello to St Petersburg

After breakfast in a local restaurant, we head off for a tour of the city. St Petersburg (formerly Leningrad) was founded by Peter the Great in 1703. Generally considered one of the most beautiful, romantic cities in the world, it has a true European feel. Home to such great writers as Pushkin and Dostoyevsky, it was here that the Russian Revolution began.

Our guided coach tour takes us to Saint Isaac’s Cathedral, Alexander Nevsky Convent, the Church of the Saviour on the Spilled Blood and Palace Square. During the afternoon, you’re free to explore on your own, or maybe just relax before visiting the ballet or opera in the evening.

Winter Palace and Hermitage Museum

The Hermitage is one of the finest art galleries in the world, with works by Leonardo da Vinci, Titian, Velázquez, Rembrandt, Matisse and Picasso. The Winter Palace – which forms part of the museum – was the official residence of Russia’s Tsars from the 18th century until Nicolas II was forced to abdicate in 1917. This is sure to be one of the highlights of your visit. As for the afternoon, you’re free to enjoy St Petersburg however you like.

We take the bus to the Peterhof Palace and Gardens, often referred to as Russia’s Versailles. The opulent palace is surrounded by gardens filled with golden statues and elaborate fountains (these fountains only operate from May until October). In the afternoon, you’re free to further explore St Petersburg, or maybe visit the Yusupov Palace, where Rasputin was famously murdered.
